Campus Missions Week (CMW), hosted by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA, is taking place April 27 to May 2. This is a week filled with different events to help bring the Carthage community together for a good cause. InterVarsity’s purpose is to reach out to college and university students by helping students have an active presence on campus and in the community. This year the service project CMW will be hosting is creating goody bags for police officers.
At first it may seem a little odd to create goody bags for law enforcement, but the bags will be used for domestic calls where children are present. Tina Mihm, ‘17, says, “The goody bag would provide something that the officer can give to the kids to help keep them entertained as the police deal with whatever problem they were called out for.”
This is where Carthage comes in. Our jobs as student and faculty is to make and fill the bags with supplies. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Carthaginians can come together as a community and prepare these bags for a better cause. Mihm informs that some items for these treat bags may include coloring books, crayons, stuffed animals and even small toys. To pay for these gifts Carthage will be selling baseball tickets for the Brewers vs. Cubs game. The game is on May 8, and tickets will be sold until there are none available.
While a Brewers game and helping give a child comfort are both exciting feelings, Missions Week is filled with other events and activities. Monday included a barbecue at the basketball courts outside of Madrigrano Hall. Tuesday, InterVarsity held a worship service in Jockey B. On Wednesday morning bananas and Gatorade were handed out as students were walking to class. Nothing is much better than a snack before your 8 a.m. Thursday evening at 7 p.m. InterVarsity will have a testimony night in WOH’s Place. There will be two to three testimonies that night. On Friday, the Student Union will be hosting a game night. This will start at 5 p.m. and go into the rest of the night. Lastly, but of course not least, a dance party will be held in WOH’s Place on Saturday after students and staff have finished making their goody bags. The festivities begin at 8 p.m.
A week filled with activities, but also a week filled with great causes. InterVarsity has been helping colleges and communities for over 70 years. It is no surprise that they would continue their mission in changing the lives of people in a community. Campus Missions week will be a fun and enjoyable time for everyone who participates. Better yet it is for a greater cause.
